UAD UA 175-B / 176 Compressor

Universal Audio UA 176 collection

I read someone’s early review of this where they said something to the effect of ‘are we running out of things to emulate that we have to find more and more obscure equipment?’ These might be obscure, but the reviewer needs to maybe visit a studio or read a little more? Just had these a couple of days, but they are quirky and fun and touchy as heck. And you have to love anything with a control marked “Vernier,” thank you Pierre.

Take note of the low end changes when you switch on the compressor. That is quite a boost on the 175-B. (You can bypass the entire compression circuit by setting the attack knob to “off”.) Plus a lot of messy harmonics and THD they modeled from these old-timers.

HINT:

Just leave the Vernier switch to the left. It’s way easier mixing quantum-ly. (Discrete steps.) I always use only even numbers on everything when I am roughing out a mix. You will be surprised how this makes things go more quickly, and then you actually feel like you are fine-tuning when you are..uh, fine-tuning.

The attack on this thing is super fast. You can chop up transients and give them a touch of distortion.
