IK Multimedia’s take on the Fairchild 670. With an interesting curve…
As you can see below the dynamics curve is set with a high ratio. I have more information about this on the UAD Fairchild 670, where you can also find information about the the Time Constant settings. Compare it to the Waves Puigchild 670 as well.
Hints:
- The compression curve for the VC-670 has a fairly hard knee, limiter-like. So it may be the better choice (among some other plugins) for things like drums or taming a vocal. The screws under the AGD knob give you some limited control over this.
- The VC-670 handles a high input level well, without distortion. Most people don’t realize the original hardware was specifically built like this, it was the final audio stop before cutting vinyl. All those tubes were trying to keep things quiet and uncolored, believe it or not.
- Not a hint, but a rare review-like observation: In my opinion, this is the best IK Multimedia emulation of real hardware. There, I said it.
For the fun of it, check out the original Fairchild Manual.
